Workout Week #1
As you may know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of this special month, I have decided that for every blog that I post for the next few weeks, will relate to health, fitness, and nutrition. I may not be a professional fitness trainer, and have that much knowledge on this topic, but over the past month or so I’ve been gradually learning something new on health and fitness. With my cousin, Becca, being a personal trainer, she has been teaching me the importance of staying fit and ways that I can keep up with a healthy lifestyle. Since, I love to go out, and have a few drinks here and there, staying fit is really important for me. Also, I know for me personally, I always feel best going out in a cute new outfit when I know I hit the gym hard that week.

For this first post, I'm pretty much just going to just give you a brief overview of the gym I joined, and my workout schedule. Just last month, I joined Healthtrax Fitness Center in West Springfield, MA. Before I started going to this gym, I never was one to be very loyal with a workout routine. I’d say I would go atleast 3 times a week, but for whatever reason a college student would give, I would always end up breaking my routine. Whether I had to work on a project, decide to go out for drinks or just were plain lazy, I usually ended up not going. Now that I’m back home for the time being, getting into a gym routine has been a lot easier for me.

Since I’m under 26, I only pay $25 a month at Healthtrax! This pass includes all access to the weight rooms, personal training room, three free healthy start personal training lessons, massages, tanning, indoor/outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, basketball courts, racketball courts, cardio machines, and fitness classes. It’s such a huge space, that even when 5 or 6 pm comes around Monday-Friday, I still don’t feel like the gym is busy. They also offer small group classes, and personal training, which involves spending a few extra bucks. Overall though, the atmosphere is just so inviting and friendly I actually enjoy going.

As far as my routine follows, generally I try to go 3 to 4 times a week. Since it’s not good to lift weights two days in a row, I try to space out my workouts when I can by mixing in some cardio and weight training. It's important to mix both into your workouts. You want to be able to build muscle strength, endurance, stamina, and flexibility. Cardio gets your heart rate going, and allows you to lose those calories. And weights allow you to build muscle and get toned! Everyday I also am sure to add in some ab exercises, considering my goal for myself is to have a six pack. Also, so you don't pull any muscles and to get your heart rate going, it's important to do a quick 10-15 minute run on the treadmill, bicycle, or go on the eliptical machine.
My routine is as follows:
Mondays: Weight training/floor exercises/weight machines
Tuesdays: Boot Camp Class
Wednesdays: Weight training/floor exercises/weight machines
Thursdays: Zumba or Kick Boxing Class
*If I have the time over the weekend or the energy, I'll try to get one more day in of weights

Remember too, if your on a budget, and can't spend the money for a gym membership, there's also other ways to get a great workout routine. You can take a class once in awhile at a studio, rent or buy workout dvds, buy some dumbbells for your home, buy a home fitness studio, go for a run outside, play a sport, whatever it's your work out! Planet Fitness offers a $10 a month membership as well if your just looking to use weights, and cardio machines.
As for my workout attire, here’s an example of something I like to wear to the gym! It’s important to get a few cute workout clothes if you plan on getting into a normal workout routine. I always love to have a good pair of yoga pants to work out in, and a ribbed tank top, so that I don’t feel like I’m drenched in sweat. Also, be sure to get a good pair of sneakers with a good grip and that are comfortable. This will allow you to avoid any unnecessary blisters (believe me I know!). Famous Footwear has a wide variety of brands, and has great deals on their shoes!
