Fifty Shades of Ohh My Goodness...
I have crossed one book off of my summer reading list and added two more to it in the process. Fifty Shades of Grey was going around my workplace and I had to read what all the fuss was about. If you haven't read it then I'm sure that you've heard about this self-published hit. Not only was the self publishing what earned it notoriety but the fact that it was a bit risque I think is what really grabbed people's attention.
The very basic story is very similar to Twilight's in that it is about a very innocent girl who falls for a dangerous older boy and is opened up to a whole new world they never imagined themselves being a part of. Now this is no coincidence because Fifty Shades of Grey started out as Twilight fan-fiction but gained such a following that it bloomed into something of it's own. While reading I saw other subtle similarities but to say if you've read Twilight then there is no need to read Fifty Shades of Grey would be completely wrong. It is definitely it's own story. One thing I will say was the same between the two is that they were awesome stories however the actual writing was just OK.
Fifty Shades of Grey is about a twenty-three year old named Anastasia Steele and how her life changes after she meets twenty-seven year old Christian Grey, entrepreneur, billionaire, most eligible bachelor in the Seattle area, and all around hottie. It sounds like every other chick-lit book out there right? Well this is where the whole risque kicks in. Christian doesn't do regular love making like you would normally read about...he's into something a little kinkier...much kinkier actually. His past is more than a little messed up and the story explains it more than I'm going to because I don't want to spoil it and I recommend reading this series! Yes it's a trilogy and there's more than just the erotic happenings in it. I would classify these books as erotic thrillers if I could. The only thing I wasn't exactly happy with was the ending. I didn't hate it but I wasn't pleased with it either. If a little "blip" didn't happen so soon then I think I would have liked it better.
While reading this I pictured which actors I could see playing who and when I was about half way through I heard that there was talk of this being made into a movie. How this will happen without it being rated X, I have no clue. My pick for Christian would be Sebastian Stan. I think he has the innocence as well as the harshness that the character portrays throughout the three books. I also heard Ian Somerhalder was a favorite but I think he would make a better Elliot, Christain's goofy yet still gorgeous brother.
As for the other characters I'm less sure. I would like Ana to be played by an unknown because I really can't picture any known actress doing some of the things done in these books. The only actresses that I've heard that I wouldn't absolutely hate would be Leighton Meester or Alexis Bledel, even though I couldn't picture Rory Gilmore doing some of these things. When it comes down to it, I really hope that this doesn't get made into a movie because there is no way they could do the story complete justice...then again what book to movie has done complete justice in adaptation?
What are your thoughts on this hit series and have you or do you think you're going to read them? Let me know!
