Wacky Wednesdays with Jenbiff

One Year Anniversary

This should come as no surprise that my favorite posts from this last year have to do with the Oldies but Goodies. I can’t even tell you how much I’ve enjoyed watching and sharing all of these movies. After looking back at all the movies I’ve seen in the past year I (struggled) but was able to come up with a list of my top 10 favorites. And since they are so different from movies and everything today, I also added a list of things that I’ve learned and figured out since watching these movies.

Top 10 Favs:

Casablanca  (Photo Credit: Google Images)
Now, Voyager (Photo Credit: Google Images)

The fact that these movies were all made before 1970 is not the only difference to movies that come out now. It was a completely different time in society, and film was brand-spankin' new. And we need to be prepared for this when we watch these movies because we may be confused and not enjoy the movie if we don't think about the difference in society. Here are my tips to understanding and enjoying old movies:

1. People smoke ALL the time. There weren't any laws saying you couldn't smoke inside or that you had to smoke 50 feet away from the building. It was a social thing along with a stress reliever. And the actors weren't faking, they really were smoking.

2. The slang they used is completely different from the slang we use today. Cat, Hooligan, Gee, Beef, Bimbo, Bum's Rush, Cat's Pajama's/Cat's Meow, Gay all have different meaning from today (if we use them at all).

3. Gender roles are a lot more defined. Men took care of business, provided for and was the head of the family. Women did the cooking, cleaning, and worrying...unless they were actresses. Then all they had to do was act proper and look fabulous.

4. People used manners, even when being rude to each other. Sounds weird, but just watch a scene where two characters aren't pleased with one another. It's the nicest argument you'll ever see.

5.  The change between two characters hating each other to falling in love is very fast and subtle. Sometimes I've missed it and were very confused when they were making out and no one was getting a slap to the face.

6. Politically correct is VERY different from now. The things they could get away with would stop the production of a movie now.

7. People are extremely honest with one another. Even if someone was trying to lie, the second they were caught they would just tell the truth...and the whole truth.

8. Most films (that I've seen at least) take place in New York, Paris, or middle of nowhere USA.

9. A lot of the jokes they used were new at the time. So when we hear a joke that we're heard a thousand times, it was probably one of the first times it was said (at least on film).

I hope these tips help you enjoy the oldies a little more!
