Oldies but Goodies

Recently I’ve been on a classic movie kick. There are so many great movies that were made before most of us were even born! Not only did these movies pave the way to how movies are made today, but they were so good that they remain must-sees for every generation since. Now I clearly was not able to watch every single classic since the dawn of movies—what can I say? A girl’s gotta sleep! But I think I’ve made quite a decent dent. I can now say that I know what movie “Here’s lookin’ at you kid”, “No wire hangers!”, and “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!” (The last one I saw before this week though) because I’ve seen the movie that made these lines famous.

So far I’ve seen: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Funny Face, The African Queen, Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, On the Waterfront, and The Great Dictator. All of which were really good. For those of you who have lives, real jobs and friends in the same area code as you, you may be thinking: “There’s no way I’ll ever be able to watch all of these and the other classics!” Don’t fret! Jenbiff is here to help make your classic movie watching decisions a little easier! Of course I can only speak about the films I’ve seen, but I will continue to update you as I watch more oldies but goodies

So for the films that I’ve seen my top two are Casablanca and The Great Dictator. Everyone and their brother’s cat have heard of Casablanca; if not you clearly live under a rock in the Geico commercials; but I’m sure most of you are wondering about The Great Dictator. The Great Dictator is a 1940 black and white movie spoofing WWII which was very bold considering WWII was still going strong. Are there any big name stars that you may know? Only one of the original stars: Charlie Chaplin. I can’t say enough good things about it! Despite being made 71 years ago it is exceptionally funny and an absolute must see.

Most local libraries should have a few classic movies for your viewing pleasure, but if the one your looking for isn’t on the shelf don’t turn your back and say they are good for nothing! Use one of the computers or ask the Librarian (who would have thought that was what they were there for?) if they can check to see if they have it. And if not, ask if they could order it from another local library, so you don’t have to spend all of your gas trying to find a library that does have it. If you can’t get to a library don’t forget to check out the TMC and AMC channels…that’s kinda their thing.

Quote of the week: “Look up! Look up! The clouds are lifting – the sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world. A kind new world where men will rise above their hate and brutality. The soul of man has been given wings – and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow – into the light of hope – into the future, that glorious future that belongs to you, to me and to all of us. Look up. Look up.”
