Wacky Wednesdays With JenBiff

Oldies but Goodies

Rebel Without A Cause
Starring: James Dean
Troubled teen, Jim Stark, and his parents recently moved to a new town to get a fresh start. After being kicked out of his last school for causing trouble, he hopes to get a fresh start because he really doesn’t want to get into fights. On his first day at his new school he meets a neighbor who goes to his school, but she quickly ditches him to be with her friends who happen to be the popular group. Stark doesn’t give up and keeps trying to be accepted by her group and her, but they end up just picking on him which he’s afraid would lead him to what happened at his old school. The leader of the group challenged Stark to a “chicken race” that night at the cliff. He goes to prove that he is man enough to stand up for his pride. During the race, the leader of the group gets his sleeve caught on his door and can’t get out in time and ends up going over the cliff. Worried that they would get in trouble, Stark and all of the popular group runs to their cars and heads home. Do they get in trouble? Will Stark ever befriend his neighbor? Will he be able to leave his past behind? I must say after seeing this movie I def understand all the love for James Dean. He was sooo adorable!

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Starring: Joan Crawford, Bette Davis
Jane Hudson was a child star, earning money for her family and loved by many. Knowing that she was the main bread-winner of her family at such a young age, she quickly learned to manipulate her father to get whatever she wanted, making a very spoiled girl. As she grew up, she couldn’t transition from child star to adult actress. As quickly as she was fading, her older sister Blanche became a very popular and famous actress. One fateful night Blanche and Jane were in an accident paralyzing Blanche forcing her to retire. After the accident, Jane cleaned up her life and took care of Blanche, but the jealousy of Blanche’s fame created a tension between the sisters. Years later, the hatred and tension that had been growing caused Jane spiral out of control again. It began with her drinking mixed with the resentment towards her sister caused her to start taking it out on her. It started with the lack of meals she would serve Blanche and ended with her doing something that she couldn't get out of. Once she realized what she had done, she desperately wanted Blanche to fix things so she won’t get in trouble. What did she do? What ends up happening to her and Blanche?
Back story to this movie: Joan Crawford and Bette Davis hated each other with a passion. I think it’s what made Bette’s character that much better, but both actresses were amazing.

I’m No Angel (1933)
Starring: Mae West, Carey Grant
Dancer, Lion-tamer and con-artist, Tira, loved men, especially rich men. She was certainly in no rush to settle down; after all she was having plenty of fun with all the men she could flirt with! Her partner and pick-pocketer, Slick Wiley, did not like when Tira told him she was done with the circus, especially after he barged in on one of her dates, knocked the guy out and stole his diamond ring! She couldn’t do such work forever, and her decision was made final when Slick ended up getting arrested for stealing her date’s ring. After one of her final performances she met Kirk Lawrence, who just so happened to be fabulously wealthy! After seeing him for a few weeks, his friend, Jack Clayton, stops by her apartment one day to tell her she should break it off because he was engaged to another woman. But he didn’t have to try too hard to convince her, because by the time he left her apartment, they both had crushes on each other. Soon there after, they began dating and were quickly engaged. The day before their wedding Slick was released from prison and found Tira’s new apartment. He knew that she was going to be married and that would be her way out of the business, so he met her Clayton and told him that she didn’t want to get married and he was wasting his time. Discouraged by what he was told, her Clayton left, and wouldn’t answer any of her calls. Would Tira ever be able to reach Clayton? Does she end up going back into the fair?

Modern Times
Starring: Charlie Chaplin
A factory worker had a successful career in a factory during the industrial revolution. Things were going well until he suffered a mental breakdown. He was sent to a mental hospital, and a few years later was well enough to go back into the world. The only problem was this was right before the Great Depression. He was released from the mental hospital for about five minutes, he tried to return something that had been dropped off the back of a truck, but was mistaken as a communist leader and was arrested. Tough luck! When he was released from the prison, he didn’t want to leave! But I don’t blame him, because it was the height of the Depression. As soon as he got out, he met a young woman who had lost her entire family, didn’t have a job, and was just trying to get some food to survive. He helped her get away from the police and they became friends. They found an old shack to live in where she would bring the food she stole for them for the day and he looked for a job. This movie was one of the last silent films made and is a cute little adventure.
