The Gossip Corner with Stine

Olympic Zone

USA! USA! USA! Wahoo! I hope everyone has been keeping up with all the Olympic action this past week, it has been a blast to watch. Everything from Gymnastics to Soccer to Beach Volleyball and Swimming, Team USA has been an unstoppable force.

Gymnastics:
Men-lost the team final and only Danell Leyva medalled in the individual all-around (he got bronze). So far they've kinda been disappointing to watch.
Women-this is where the real action is! The Fab Five won the team final picking up only the 2nd gold for the USA since the Magnificent Seven 12 years ago. America's newest sweetheart, Gabby Douglas, took the gold in the individual all-around and Aly Raisman was just inched out by Russia's Aliya Mustafina for the bronze. Yesterday was a bit of a disappointment for McKayla Maroney when she landed her second vault flat on her bum, earning her the silver. There was no medal for the US women in the uneven bars with Gabby the only one competing on that apparatus. They will finish up tomorrow with Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas on balance beam and Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman on floor exercise.

Beach Volleyball:
Men-2008 gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers were shut out of the medal contention by Italy. However, there was still hope for a medal if Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal could win their quarterfinal today against Latvia. Unfortunately they got shut out in the 3rd match.
Women-both teams, May-Treanor/Walsh-Jennings and Ross/Kessy are in the semis!! The USA women are just dominating at this Olympics. Misty May and Kerri Walsh are the defending '04 & '08 gold medalists and are favored to win. It will be there last Olympics playing together, Misty says she's done but Kerri might go for Rio in 2016. The semis are tomorrow and final matches for bronze and gold are on Wednesday.

Soccer:
Women-they have dominated this entire Olympics, taking out one opponent after another and all while battling injuries. Abby Wambach was even punched in the eye by a player from Colombia! Alex Morgan nicknamed "the Ferrari" by some for her amazing speed down the soccer pitch, accidentally kneed New Zealand goal keeper. Some have also criticized the USA for their celebration routines, as you can imagine the ones complaining are the teams they've beat. They play Canada today and will hopefully go on to the final to play Japan for the gold.

 Swimming:
Women-the future of American swimming is safe with superstars Missy Franklin, Allison Schmitt, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer, and Katie Ledecky. Missy seemed unstoppable taking home 5 medals, 4 of them are gold!! Allison Schmitt, who trains with Michael Phelps also took home 5 medals, 3 were gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. The women were unstoppable in the relays taking home 2 golds and a bronze.
Men-this was basically Michael Phelps's swan song as he is retiring after this Olympics. He got off to a rough start in the 400-IM where his teammate/friend/rival Ryan Lochte took gold. Michael came back though and is now the most decorated Olympian EVER!!! He also has the most gold medals, 18 to be exact and now has 22 medals in all. He three-peated on 2 events the 200M and 100M butterfly-his signature event. It was the perfect way to end an incredible career and we'll probably never have another athlete quite like him. There's still more to come from Ryan Lochte, Nathan Adrian, and Matt Grevers who all took home gold in their individual events.

There's more to look forward to this week with Men's and Women's Basketball finals, can't wait to see Team USA bring home the gold!
